This year’s DILG-NCR Dagyaw Town Hall Meeting zeroed in on the critical strategies to prepare for the potential impacts of the anticipated earthquake scenarios in Metro Manila. These scenarios include the predicted 7.2-magnitude earthquake from the West Valley Fault System, popularly known as “The Big One,” as well as an offshore 7.9-magnitude earthquake from the Manila Trench, and a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hitting Manila Bay.
Key Takeaways from the Dagyaw Discussions:
Understanding Risks and Taking Necessary Precautions In the National Capital Region, the West Valley Fault is a constant reminder of the possibility of a large seismic event. While we cannot predict exactly when an earthquake will occur, understanding the risks from the data provided by the PHIVOLCS and OCD is needed to take proactive steps in minimizing damage and protecting lives and properties.
Collaboration and Unified Efforts for Disaster Preparedness and Response: Through the whole-of-society approach, we reduce the risks and impacts of earthquakes and ensure a coordinated and efficient response. LGUs are responsible for implementing local policies and emergency management, while the private sector can provide essential resources, technology, and logistics. CSOs contribute by addressing the needs of vulnerable communities, and the academe plays a key role in research, training, and raising awareness. When all these sectors collaborate seamlessly, it ensures that earthquake preparedness plans are holistic, inclusive, and effective.
Need for More Capacity Building Activities at the Barangay Level Barangays play a crucial role in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Given their proximity to communities, they are the first responders during an earthquake and therefore, needs to strengthen their capacity before, during, and after the onset of The Big One. Participants requested for additional comprehensive training/seminars cultivating on local knowledge and contextual understanding of their areas.
Through the Dagyaw Townhall Meeting, key actors and stakeholders were able to discuss and be involved in the discourse on earthquake preparedness and response in Metro Manila. The DILG-NCR will remain steadfast in transforming this dialogue into action and enjoin the general public in taking deliberate steps towards a quake-ready community.
Let’s act together and build a safer, more resilient future!
